The History Bit

(These pages are from the late David Backhouse's www.jukejoint.co.uk website. Nothing has been added. There are a few minor changes to link the files together. Unfortunately, some of the details of the house to house research are missing.
I cannot see David's name on these pages. This a sign of his modesty rather than an omission.
Anyway, I do not know if this information exists anywhere else. Here it is - Hans Hoffbauer)

As an offshoot from producing the Wiltshire pub guides, and commencing research in 1980, I decided to specialise in local pub and brewery history.

The outcome was the publication in 1984 of "Home Brewed - a history of pubs and breweries in the Swindon area".

This gave the histories of all the pubs and brewers, past and present, in "Greater Swindon" from around 1830.

I undertook further research later, and was able to delve back further. In 1992 I published a new corrected and improved edition of the book. I was able to include a chapter giving sites and details of Swindon pubs before 1830, in some cases going back to the c17. The book is available from me at a price of £5 plus postage.

If you would like to see the chapter "Swindon Pubs before 1830" then enter here.

I even have a list of Old Swindon licensees from the mid c18 - look!

See the Wiltshire pubs of yesteryear in Kelly's Directory of 1848 or 1880

I am at present researching the history of all the buildings in Old Town, Swindon.

I have a huge database of deeds, documents etc and will be glad to hear from other researchers.
